The 14th Rhode Island Reenactors Program helps Providence high school
students recreate the history of the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery
Regiment. By being immersed in the life of the Black soldier of the Civil
War, the students learn about the role of African Americans during the war and
about the history of the war generally.
The 14th Rhode Island participates in parades, celebrations
and
living history presentations and educate others by their example. The
students drill with and fire authentic replicas of Civil War rifles and participate in
reenactments equipped with every item issued to the Federal soldier in 1864.
Camp experiences are authentic, down to the canvas tents and hardtack for
breakfast.
The program was founded in 2001 by the non-profit Living History, Inc. The mission of the regiment is to keep the memory of the original 14th Rhode Island alive and to carry out its mission of freedom and justice.
