The Program The 14th RI Events Enlist Support Contact

Winner of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities
2009 Tom Roberts Prize for Creative Achievement in the Humanities

awarded to the 14th Rhode Island Reenactor Program "for its creativity in promoting Rhode Island history and culture, in engaging youth, and in advancing the message of civic engagement."

Living History's 14th Rhode Island Program trains Providence high school students to reenact the history of the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, the state's black Civil War regiment.

Students participate in reenactments, living history events  and historical ceremonies and learn about the role of African Americans during the Civil War by becoming immersed in the life of a Black Civil  War artilleryman.  They keep the memory of the 14th alive and continue to carry out its mission of freedom and justice through their teaching and through the example that they set.

Explore our web site to learn more about the original 14th RI regiment, our program, how to join the regiment, and how to arrange for the 14th to appear at your school, parade or program.  Volunteers and donations are always needed and valued.
