Recipient with the Roger Williams National Memorial of a 2011 Park Steward Grant awarded by the National park Foundation to develop a course with the MET teaching research, historic interpretation, park program planning and community outreach.
Winner of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities 2009 Tom Roberts Prize for Creative Achievement in the Humanities awarded to the 14th Rhode Island Reenactor Program "for its creativity in promoting Rhode Island history and culture, in engaging youth, and in advancing the message of civic engagement."
Living History's 14th Rhode Island Program trains Providence high school students to reenact the history of the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, the state's black Civil War regiment. The organization is also working with the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center to provide education in history and historic preservation and history-related jobs.
Students take courses, participate hands-on
workshops in medicine, cooking, politics, media, art and other topics as well as
participating in reenactments, living
history events and
historical ceremonies. They learn how to do research, historic
interpretation and community outreach while discovering the role of African Americans
played during the
Civil War. They keep the memory of the 14th alive and continue to carry
out its mission of freedom and justice through their teaching and through the
example that they set.
Explore our web site to learn more about the original 14th RI regiment, our program, how to join the regiment, and how to arrange for the 14th to appear at your school, parade or program. Volunteers and donations are always needed and valued.
